Gastric
Surgery - Aftercare USA
Gastric Bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, MacLean VBG
Surgery..
Before you return home you will receive a letter
to give to your physician. This letter will explain to the physician
the gastric procedure you have had together with the 6 month blood
test requirements. You must see a physician to have blood tests
6 months following gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy or MacLean
VBG surgery. This will ensure that the surgery is working correctly,
you are receiving the correct vitamins and achieving your weight
loss goals. This initial visit can then be followed by annual checkups.

also include a consultation.

Minimum requirement for Lap-Band aftercare
After the Lap-Band, ideally your first aftercare
visit should be 2 – 4 weeks after your surgery. The first
adjustment to the Lap-Band occurs on the 6-week post-operative visit.
This allows time for the band to scar in place and to minimize the
chance of the band slipping out of position.
This should be followed by regular quarterly visits
for the first year and by annual visits thereafter. Subsequent visits
depend on your weight loss.
The average patient undergoes 3- 4 adjustments before
the ideal tightness is established. The lap-band generally requires
adjustments when patients are feeling hungry, not losing weight
and not having satiety early after eating. Sometimes the band is
too tight and fluid needs to be removed from the band. Patients
whose band is too tight are unable to eat any solid foods.
If your band is overfilled, the consequences may
be that you are restricted from eating or taking fluids. So please
remember that for your safety and comfort the surgeon will try to
reach your optimum adjustment by coming up to the correct amount
of fill fluid. This may mean that following a fill you don't loose
weight and may need an increase in the fill. So please be patient
and if your not loosing weight satisfactorily discuss this with
your aftercare surgeon.
In addition you may need the band readjusted
or loosened under the following circumstances:
- Going on holiday - loosening the band will
enable you to relax more on holiday.. it can be refilled on your
return.
- Where you may have a number of long haul flights
– the band can become restricted due to the air pressure
differenced experienced with long flights.. it may need deflating
slightly for a while.
- When pregnant – the band is deflated
a little to enable you to eat more comfortably during this period.
