Sigmoidectomy
What is Sigmoidectomy ?
Sigmoidectomy is the surgical removal of part or
all of the sigmoid colon (usually to remove a malignant tumor).
The sigmoid colon is the part just above your rectum. It is S-shaped.

Will it require surgery ?
You may need surgery if:
- You have diverticulitis with bleeding and infection.
(Diverticulitis is inflammation of the sacs formed at weak points
along your alimentary tract.)
- Your diverticula, (the sacs described above),
are ruptured, causing inflammation of the lining of your abdominal
cavity.
- You have cancerous or pre cancerous growths,
(called " polyps").
How is the need for Surgery Determined?
- The surgeon doctor will ask you about your
medical history and will physically examine you.
- Tests may take place such as blood and urine
studies, X-rays of upper and lower gastrointestinal tract.
- An endoscopy may be necessary - involving a
tube, with a miniature light and optical system, being inserted
into your body.
What does the operation Involve
?
- General anaesthetic by injection and inhalation
with an airway tube placed in the windpipe (trachea).
- An epidural catheter may be placed in the back
for post-op pain control.
- An incision is made in the abdomen, and the
abdominal muscles are opened.
- The sigmoid colon is isolated and clamps are
placed at each end.
- All of the diseased sigmoid colon is cut free
and removed.
